Stripe Launches Issuing Platform for Embedded Card Programs

In July 2018, Stripe announced the launch of Stripe Issuing, a card-issuing platform that allows online businesses and platforms to programmatically create and distribute virtual or physical credit and debit cards via API. The product is designed to dramatically reduce the time needed to launch card-issuing programs from months to days by integrating directly with Stripe's existing payments infrastructure for seamless account management, payments, balance handling, verifications, and funding. Stripe Issuing supports a range of embedded finance use cases, including consumer debit cards, corporate expense management cards, and on-demand platform disbursements.

Features include customizable spending controls, merchant category restrictions, dispute handling, and support for Apple Pay and Google Pay. The launch positioned Stripe as a key enabler of embedded banking for platforms, allowing non-financial companies to offer branded card products without building banking infrastructure from scratch. Financial terms were not publicly disclosed.

The product marked a significant expansion of Stripe's BaaS capabilities beyond payment acceptance into card issuance.
