Standard Chartered Partners with Bukalapak to Launch BaaS Digital Banking

On January 14, 2021, Standard Chartered announced a partnership with Bukalapak, one of Indonesia's largest e-commerce platforms, to deliver digital banking solutions through its nexus BaaS platform. The nexus platform serves as a white-label solution that allows Bukalapak to embed banking products such as accounts and payments directly into its marketplace under its own brand. This integration means Bukalapak's 100+ million users and 13.5 million sellers can access financial services without leaving the e-commerce app.

Standard Chartered contributes its regulated banking infrastructure and the nexus BaaS technology stack, while Bukalapak provides the customer base and distribution channel. The partnership is part of Standard Chartered's broader digital strategy, which also includes initiatives like Mox (a Hong Kong virtual bank) and Solv (an SME services platform). No specific financial terms were disclosed.

The deal represents a major step in bringing embedded banking to Southeast Asia's large underbanked population.
