Shift4 Acquires Smartpay for $180 Million in APAC Expansion
Shift4, a US-based integrated payments and commerce technology company, acquired Smartpay for $180 million in June 2025. Smartpay operates as a payment processing firm serving merchants in Australia and New Zealand, offering payment terminal hardware and processing services. The acquisition gives Shift4 a direct entry point into the APAC payments market, complementing its existing operations in North America and Europe.
The $180 million deal was one of the top five fintech M&A transactions of June 2025. For Shift4, the acquisition supports its strategy of building a global embedded payments platform that serves hospitality, retail, and other merchant verticals. The deal provides Smartpay's merchant base with access to Shift4's broader technology stack and integrated commerce capabilities.
This expansion into ANZ positions Shift4 to compete with established APAC payment providers and further embed financial services into merchant software platforms.
- Demonstrates continued consolidation in the global embedded payments market as integrated commerce platforms pursue geographic expansion through M&A.
- APAC embedded payments market faces increased competition from well-capitalized US-based payment infrastructure providers.
