Ripple Receives Final OCC Approval to Establish National Trust Bank
The OCC granted Ripple final approval on Oct 26, 2026 to charter Ripple National Trust Bank (RNTB) as a federally supervised national trust bank. The decision followed conditional OCC approval in Dec 2025. RNTB's approved activities include managing the segregated reserves backing RLUSD, acting as collateral trustee for the benefit of RLUSD holders, and providing fiduciary digital asset custody services.
RLUSD will continue to be issued by Standard Custody & Trust Company, Ripple's NYDFS-regulated limited purpose trust company. BNY serves as the primary reserve custodian for RLUSD, which has grown to a $2.5 billion market cap since its Dec 2024 launch. RLUSD is fully backed by U.S. dollar deposits, U.S. government securities, and other cash equivalents.
Ripple publishes monthly independent third-party attestations covering the stablecoin's circulating supply and reserve assets.
- Crypto-native firms gaining federal bank charters signals growing regulatory acceptance and could accelerate institutional adoption of digital-asset custody and stablecoin infrastructure.
- A federally chartered trust bank for stablecoin reserves raises the bar for reserve transparency and could pressure competitors to seek similar regulatory standing.
