Mastercard Launches "Mastercard For Fintechs" Program in Western Europe
On June 5, 2024, Mastercard announced the launch of "Mastercard For Fintechs," a new program designed to support the fintech ecosystem across Western Europe. The initiative targets pre-seed, seed, and Series A fintechs operating in payments, Web3, blockchain, new payment flows, banking & SMEs, embedded finance, and sustainable technology. The program includes a competition series with events in Paris (June 25), Madrid (September 25), Amsterdam (October 4), and Milan (October 8), culminating in a final in Paris on November 25, 2024.
The winning fintech will receive €50,000 in marketing support, a fast-track to Mastercard's Start Path accelerator—which has supported over 380 fintechs from 54 countries including unicorns like Revolut—and dedicated mentoring. The program covers fintechs operating in Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Spain, and Portugal. Mastercard positioned the initiative as a response to ongoing fundraising challenges facing early-stage fintechs in the region, aiming to provide tools and connections to help them scale.
- Mastercard deepens its embedded finance ecosystem play by courting early-stage fintechs as future card-issuing and payments partners across Western Europe.
- The program signals card networks' growing role as ecosystem orchestrators in BaaS, competing with Visa's own fintech accelerator initiatives.
