India's RBI to Launch Digital Payment Intelligence Platform for Banks

RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra announced on Aug 11, 2026, that the Reserve Bank of India will provide banks with a Digital Payment Intelligence Platform to tackle fraud in the digital payments ecosystem. He spoke at the FIBAC 2026 conference in Mumbai. The platform will rely on artificial intelligence and machine learning to detect fraudulent transactions.

Malhotra noted that smaller banks without their own AI models will need to depend on vendors, making data protection and governance especially important. He urged banks to assess their AI adoption progress and build governance structures around its use. Even as AI models grow more sophisticated, Malhotra said, human judgement and accountability must remain central to bank decision-making.

He called on financial institutions to treat AI governance as a priority.
