Mastercard Selects Aion Bank and Vodeno for Fintech Express Program
On April 20, 2021, Mastercard announced the selection of Aion Bank, powered by Vodeno's Banking-as-a-Service cloud platform, as a strategic partner for its Fintech Express program in Europe. Through this partnership, European fintechs gain access to Aion Bank's licensed banking capabilities and Vodeno's BaaS infrastructure via Mastercard's APIs and compliance support. The embedded finance features available include decoupled debit, buy-now-pay-later (BNPL), and merchant finance products.
Fintechs leveraging this partnership will not need to pre-fund accounts or build traditional credit products from scratch, significantly accelerating their time to market. Fintech Express is part of the broader Mastercard Accelerate initiative, which supports fintechs from market entry through global expansion. Aion Bank contributes its European banking license while Vodeno provides the cloud-native technology stack.
The collaboration positions all three parties to capture growing demand for embedded financial services across the European fintech ecosystem. Financial terms of the partnership were not disclosed.
- Validates the BaaS model in Europe by combining a card network, a licensed bank, and a cloud-native platform under one program
- Lowers barriers for European fintechs to embed payments, BNPL, and lending, intensifying competition among BaaS providers in the region
