Japanese Banks Plan API Gateway for Zengin Payment System by 2027

On September 15, 2022, the Japanese Bankers Association published plans for an API Gateway to the Zengin interbank payment system, Japan's primary domestic payment clearing network. The gateway will standardize how third-party providers, including fintechs, connect to the payment system, replacing fragmented bilateral integrations with a unified API layer. The target completion date is 2027.

By lowering the technical barriers to entry, the API Gateway is expected to significantly ease fintech participation in Japan's payment ecosystem and enable new embedded finance use cases. The initiative aligns with global trends toward open banking and payment system modernization. The standardized connectivity could catalyze a wave of BaaS and embedded payment offerings in the Japanese market, one of the world's largest banking sectors.
