HSBC and Standard Chartered Go Live on Swift's Blockchain Ledger
HSBC and Standard Chartered completed the first live cross-border transaction on Swift's blockchain-based ledger on Aug 20, 2026. The two banks moved tokenised deposits across the ledger, which acted as an orchestration layer to match and net obligations. Each bank then recorded the results on its own systems: HSBC used its Tokenised Deposit Service, while Standard Chartered relied on its own tokenised-deposit infrastructure.
Settlement flowed through existing banking rails rather than requiring new plumbing. The transaction converts an earlier pilot commitment into a working transfer between two named institutions. Swift's ledger lets member banks transact with tokenised assets without rebuilding their infrastructure from scratch.
- Validates blockchain-based settlement within existing correspondent banking infrastructure, potentially accelerating tokenised deposit adoption across Swift's network
- Signals that major banks are moving beyond pilots to production use of distributed ledger technology for cross-border payments
