Citizens Bank Launches Open Banking API for Third-Party App Access
On March 27, 2025, Citizens Bank announced the launch of its Open Banking API, designed to provide secure, permissioned access to account balances and transaction data for third-party applications. The API targets fintech and personal finance applications such as budgeting tools, enabling consumers to connect their Citizens accounts to external platforms seamlessly. This launch aligns with the broader industry shift toward open banking and data-sharing standards, particularly as U.S. regulators move toward Section 1033 implementation under the CFPB.
By providing a standardized API, Citizens reduces reliance on screen-scraping methods and gives customers more control over their financial data. The initiative supports the embedded finance ecosystem by enabling fintechs to build integrated experiences using Citizens account data. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The move positions Citizens among a growing number of mid-to-large U.S. banks proactively building open banking infrastructure.
- U.S. banks are accelerating open banking API adoption ahead of regulatory mandates, expanding fintech integration opportunities
