China's PBoC Adds Eight Banks to Digital Yuan Clearing System

The People's Bank of China added eight commercial banks to its digital yuan clearing system on Aug 17, 2026, expanding the network to 30 accredited operators. The new participants are Ping An Bank, Hengfeng Bank, China Bohai Bank, Bank of Shanghai, Bank of Hangzhou, Huishang Bank, Bank of Changsha, and Guangxi Beibu Gulf Bank. Each institution will begin offering digital yuan services after completing technical integrations.

The central bank said the expansion aims to broaden access to the digital currency framework and meet consumer demand for streamlined transaction systems. The batch includes joint-stock commercial banks and city commercial banks intended to fill service gaps in regional small and medium-sized enterprise coverage and cross-border trade. Beijing had paused expanding its operator list for over two years before resuming in October 2025, then added 12 lenders in April 2026.
