Adyen Selected as GOV.UK Pay Payment Services Provider
The UK Government Digital Service (GDS) appointed Adyen on Jun 02, 2026 as the new payment services provider for GOV.UK Pay, the government's online payment platform. The deal covers non-Crown card payments and pay-by-bank services. Adyen replaces Stripe for GOV.UK Pay processing across approximately 1,000 public sector services, including local councils, armed forces and police.
The appointment followed a competitive procurement process. GOV.UK Pay has processed more than £9 billion through over 135 million transactions since launching in 2016. GOV.UK Pay will manage the migration directly with service teams to maintain continuity for organisations and citizens making payments online.
- Signals growing public sector willingness to adopt payments-as-a-service models from fintech platforms, potentially opening a new market segment for BaaS providers
- Adyen's entry into UK public sector payments intensifies competition with Stripe and other payment processors for large institutional contracts
- Embedding open banking pay-by-bank into government payments could accelerate consumer familiarity and adoption of open banking more broadly
