Adro Selects Stearns Bank as BaaS Sponsor for International Students
On May 21, 2024, Adro announced it had selected Stearns Bank N.A. as its BaaS sponsor bank to provide checking, savings, and credit products tailored to international students and workers in the United States. The partnership enables Adro users to open accounts before arriving in the U.S. without requiring a Social Security number, removing a significant barrier for newcomers. Upon arrival, users gain immediate access to debit and credit cards through Apple Pay and Google Wallet, along with the ability to start building a U.S. credit history right away.
Adro also offers discounted international money transfers as part of the service bundle. Stearns Bank, headquartered in Minnesota, provides the underlying banking infrastructure and customized solutions that power these offerings. Adro is targeting university partnerships for the 2024-2025 academic year, with a planned product launch in the summer of 2024.
The arrangement represents a focused BaaS deployment aimed at an underserved niche within the broader U.S. financial services market.
- Demonstrates continued demand for niche BaaS deployments targeting underserved demographics despite heightened regulatory scrutiny of the BaaS model.
- University channel partnerships could create a scalable distribution model for embedded finance products aimed at international populations.
